“Let’s face it, you aren’t going to do that”. The exact words my PCP said to me when breaking the news to me that I was full blown Type II Diabetic. His very first response to me was to prescribe a statin. Statins are prescribed to lower cholesterol and are one of the most heavily prescribed medicines in the world. The most popular statin being Lipitor as I’m sure you’ve seen thousands of commercials if you live in the United States.
The conversation went like this:
Doctor: Your A1C is 7.1, that is Type II Diabetic. You are obese, your total cholesterol is elevated and your LDL is too high. We are going to start you on a statin.
Also, he continued, you will need to set an appointment to see a nutritionist to teach you what to eat as a diabetic.
Me: How long will I have to take the statin.
Doctor: Probably from now on. The standard of care is to start Lipitor when you become Type II Diabetic, are overweight and have elevated cholesterol. (implying that Type II is forever)
Me: What if I take steps to lose weight, lower my A1C and my improve my LDL? (Having no idea how to do that, at the time.)
His response: Let’s face it, you aren’t going to do that….
I was dumbfounded. His first response to me was to put me on the most heavily prescribed medicine of all time because, in his own words, I’m not capable of making the lifestyle changes I need to improve my health.
And That’s What Sent Me On My Journey
I have spent the last almost four years researching metabolism, diabetes, cholesterol, observing studies, reading numerous books from engineers, PhDs, cardiologists and nephrologists, listening to hours of podcasts and changing my lifestyle. Along the way I have learned that most of what we have been led to believe about how to get and stay healthy just isn’t true. I have learned that you have to advocate for yourself and your family. Our current “healthcare” system is not actually on your side and is very broken. The overwhelming majority of doctors are obligated to follow an archaic “Standard of Care” protocol even if the most up to date science doesn’t back it up.
Considering that 78% of Americans are metabolically unhealthy, I’m sure that lot’s of you have heard similar “advice” from your Primary doc.
It’s time to stand up for yourself and your family. It’s not normal for you to be chronically sick. Your doctor works for you. Make sure the decisions that your doctor makes are in your and your family’s best interest. It’s not normal for most of us to be on medications for the rest of our lives.
I have, because of my own research and actions, completely reversed my Type 2 diabetes, lowered my blood pressure, reduced my weight to a healthy level, dropped my triglycerides 75% and reduced the inflammation in my body to better than normal levels. All without medication.
Ask your doctor how many patients he or she has been able to get off of medications? How cool would it be if doctors were compensated based on how many patient’s health they have improved and described instead of only caring for you when you are sick?? Your doctor doesn’t get paid for your healthcare. Your doctor gets paid for your sickcare. Pharmaceutical companies get paid for your sickcare not your healthcare. Keeping you “chronically” on medication for the rest of your life is good for the drug company’s profits and their stock prices. This practice is perverse and will never attempt to make us healthier. Profiting on your sickcare is NOT in your best interest. It just isn’t. You have to stand up for yourself.
